DRIVE SAFELY PROGRAM

Need help regaining your confidence on the road after an injury or because of a disability?

The DRIVE SAFELY PROGRAM can help. The Drive Safely Program is a clinical assessment and training program for people who have experienced physical, cognitive, or visual changes that may affect safe, independent driving. The program provides participants with a comfortable and non-threatening environment to assess driving skills.

Participants are seen by an occupational therapy staff member who will evaluate and treat when apropriate, physical, visual, perceptual, and cognitive performance, and make referrals to on-the-road evaluators and specialists in appropriate areas.

The evaluation consists of an interview to establish the participant's driving and related health history; a physical assessment to test strength, range of motion and balance; a cognitive evaluation to determine the ability to organize and react to traffic information; and a sensory evaluation to determine the abilities or the person to perceive his or her environment.

Therapists are trained to look at physical and cognitive issues, and are able to evaluate and provide retraining for disabled or elderly drivers. They can provide objective evidence of individuals who could be unsafe on the road and help to prolong the mobility of those who have potential to be safe drivers.

A physician referral is needed to receive a drive safely evaluation.
